An Unusual Exhibition: "The Magazine of Beautiful Life"

The Museum of Russian Impressionism in Moscow is currently hosting a unique and fascinating exhibition titled The Magazine of Beautiful Life.

The exhibition is based on the first Russian glamour magazine, Stolitsa i Usadba, published from 1913 to 1917. The magazine’s slogan, as stated by its publisher, was: "Beautiful life is not available to everyone, but it still exists." From the perspective of the 21st century, modern viewers may find it difficult to grasp the subtleties of the lifestyle and manners of those who lived in the last pre-revolutionary years.

One of the sections of the exhibition is called Tourism, after a regular feature in the magazine. The reflections on tourism and travel, written more than 100 years ago, remain relevant today. As noted in the magazine:

"One of the greatest pleasures available to people is traveling. The most cultured people, the English, have long known this and have traveled more than all other nations combined..."

The exhibition runs until 6 October 2024.
